The Top 5 Truths about counseling, therapy, psychotherapy, and coaching in Houston.
There are a lot of different opinions on what therapy can do and what it looks like, of course, every therapist has their own style, but what does that mean?
You’re narrowing down your search but you probably have a ton of questions- that is completely normal.
So here are a few truths about therapy.
Counseling truth #1: It takes time.
When we are in pain, we are often looking for quick solutions, but therapy isn’t a “quick-fix” approach as it can take time to explore and process the issues that are happening. Just as most problems didn’t appear overnight, it may take some time for things to start changing.
Counseling truth #2: The relationship is important.
Attending therapy can be deeply personal. People share things they may not share with others. Because of this, it’s important to feel comfortable with your therapist and eventually build trust to be able to share things that may be difficult to discuss.
Counseling truth #3: It might feel worse before it gets better.
Therapy is not a linear process, in some sessions you may leave feeling good, and in others maybe not so much. These feelings are often temporary and can be part of the therapy process.
Counseling truth #4: It requires work
Sometimes there are assumptions that you just show up and listen and the therapist will tell you what to do. Although showing up for appointments is important, applying skills and concepts discussed outside of the therapy session is a big part of your work.
